Coastal Roots an exhibition by Peter J Scott & Bryan Angus

Peter and Bryan share a formative experience  – throughout their childhood growing up in cities, their holidays and visits to extended family drew them to the small fishing villages of the Moray Firth.

This reflects a common enough Scottish tradition, escaping to your roots and heritage every summer, which in turn reinforces a sense of place and belonging. This exhibition describes their on-going exploration of that sense of belonging.

Peter J Scott is a contemporary Scottish artist and educator who heavily incorporates social geography,  architecture, and personal history into his work, he lives in Kilsyth and balances his active studio practice with a full-time career as an art teacher in Falkirk Scotland.

Peter graduated from the Glasgow School of Art in 2001, specialising in Environmental Art under artist David Harding. His practice combines personal photography, bold colour choices, and textured layers to piece together architectural landscapes that evoke specific memories and mood.

“Our life experience informs and fuels our imagination and ideas. The experiences we have, the people we meet, the stories we hear, the stories we live, those who we love or have loved and those we have lost. It’s all inside us it makes up who we are.”

Bryan Angus is a Scottish visual artist, painter, and printmaker based in Banff on the Moray Firth coast of Aberdeenshire.

A graduate of Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, where he studied painting, Angus has built a distinctive practice centred on linocut printmaking, drawing inspiration from the dramatic landscapes, coastal communities, and rich cultural history of northeast Scotland.

His bold, atmospheric works combine strong draftsmanship with a deep appreciation for place, capturing the interplay of light, weather, architecture, and the enduring relationship between people and the land. His work is held internationally in public and private collections.
