With its mix of stunning landscapes, historical landmarks, and surprising sites, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to soak up the best of Scotland’s autumn beauty. Here, Lesley Sweeney, Falkirk Council’s Countryside Ranger, shares her top recommendations for the best autumn walks in the area.
1. Muiravonside Country Park and the River Avon Heritage Trail
Part of the 9 mile River Avon Heritage Trail, Muiravonside Country Park is one of Falkirk’s prime spots for an autumn walk. With a café, demonstration farm and arts trail also on-site, stay for the day and immerse yourself in nature’s seasonal palette. Home to Scotland’s longest aqueduct, the River Avon Heritage Trail combines dramatic views and insights into the industrial revolution with a colourful route lined with vibrant autumn foliage and the gentle flow of the river.

2. Golden Grandeur at Kinneil Nature Reserve
Kinneil Nature Reserve comes alive in autumn. Adjacent to the Firth of Forth Special Protected Area, its grasses and birch trees turn a gorgeous golden hue making this site of a former colliery a great place for an autumn wander. Watch migratory birds return to the waters of the Forth and enjoy sweeping views of the Ochil Hills and beyond. It’s the perfect coastal spot to appreciate the full spectrum of autumn colours as nature prepares for winter.

3. Watch Wild Salmon Leap at Larbert Viaduct
Larbert Viaduct offers an unexpected and dramatic autumn experience. Walk along the River Carron and look out for wild Atlantic salmon leaping Larbert Weir on their way home to spawn. This spectacular annual event attracts both photographers and nature enthusiasts.

4. Exploring Dunmore Estate
Dunmore Estate combines natural beauty with historical intrigue. The walk from the Pineapple through Dunmore village is a journey through both history and nature. Along the way, you’ll encounter landmarks like Elphinstone Tower, the eccentric Pineapple, Dunmore House, and the elusive Hermit’s Cave. The woods are especially beautiful in autumn, offering dramatic views of the Forth and the nearby Ochil Hills.

5. Take the Tree Tunnel to Bothkennar Pools
Not far from the iconic Kelpies, you’ll find one of Falkirk’s hidden treasures – the tree tunnel on the road to the RSPB nature reserve at Bothkennar. Its canopy of leaves turns stunning shades of gold and amber in autumn, creating a natural tunnel that is truly enchanting. The walk takes you to Bothkennar Pools, uniquely featuring both saline and freshwater lagoons as well as reed beds that are a haven for wildlife. It’s the perfect place for a spot of autumn birdwatching.

6. Callendar Park and Woodland
Located near Falkirk Town Centre, Callendar Park is an obvious choice for an autumn stroll when you’re in the area. Against the backdrop of the grandeur of Callendar House, take a stroll around the picturesque boating lake with its reflections of ancient trees in their autumn finery. Then follow the park’s historic woodland trails that are filled with seasonal colour and wildlife busy preparing for the winter.

7. Roman Remnants at Rough Castle
Rough Castle, part of the ancient Roman Antonine Wall, provides an atmospheric autumn walk. The sense of history as you explore the remnants of this ancient fortification makes a walk here a fascinating experience. Then take a walk through the woodland next to Rough Castle to discover the modern marvel of the Falkirk Wheel that dramatically joins the Union and Forth and Clyde Canals.
